a. MONZA

MONZA

The historical city of Monza is home to a host of unique attractions and is an ideal base to explore the Brianza area. Its historic importance evolved during Longobard times when Queen Teodolinda converted the population to Catholicism.

The main monument of the town is the splendid Cathedral, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, patron saint of Monza. This beautiful example of Gothic church, which stands in the homonymous square, was built in the 14th century on the site of the previous baptistery ordered by Queen Teodolinda at the end of the 6th century. On the left side of the presbytery is the so-called Chapel of Queen Teodolinda, frescoed by the Zavattari.

The Iron Crown (Corona Ferrea) is kept in the same Chapel. An ancient tradition tells that one of the spikes of Christ’s Cross, found by St. Helena and given to his son, the Emperor Constantine, was inserted into the Crown.

The Royal Villa (Villa Reale) built between 1777 and 1780, commissioned by the archduke of Austria, Ferdinand, is one of the most important neo-classical buildings in Italy. Particularly worth visiting is the conservatory in spring and early summer to admire the splendid rose garden.

Created in 1806 by Eugenie de Beauharnais, the Park covers an area of 800ha, most of which consisting of woods and meadows. It is a delightful place to explore. This green oasis is a valuable refuge for a surprising variety of birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals that increase the value and natural interest of the area. The park is also a great opportunity for outdoor sports, recreation, wellness and socialization. The famous racing track, built in 1922 on the initiative of the “Automobile Club of Milan”, is situated in the northern area of the park and it is open all year around. Important event are held here like the F1 Grand Prix.

d. COMO

COMO

Como, founded by the Romans and still surrounded on three sides by medieval walls, it offers magnificent sacred buildings, villas, historic parks and lush greenery. The Old Town is rich in monuments and works of art. In the charming Piazza del Duomo stands the Broletto, the old Town Hall built in 1200. Besides the elegant portico, in the same century was erected the Bell Tower of the City. The Cathedral of Como is a real jewel that gathers different architectural styles: Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. At the end of the old city stand Porta Torre in the middle of the mighty walls.

Continuing towards the lake you come to Piazza Cavour, formerly a commercial city port. Along the lake to the left you reach the public gardens and the Aero Club Como, where you can experience a fly above the lake. From here you start the beautiful walk that leads to Villa Olmo, built in the late eighteenth century. The giant tree that gave its name to the villa no longer exists, but the Italian garden and the park at the back are full of trees and tall trees. On them overlook numerous villas.

Como is also a city of silk. The story of the golden thread starts off in the south regions, arriving in the area of Como around 1400. Famous worldwide thanks to the creation of design that makes each silk product unique, Como with its silk district is considered the world capital of silk. To find the testimony of the history of silk in this beautiful city you can visit the Silk Museum, a route that links the past to the present of an industry that still maintains the primacy over the world.

The Lake

Lake Como, measuring  146 km is the third largest lake after Lake Garda and Verbano. It is characteristically shaped in an up-side-down ‘Y' with three points: north is Colico, Lecco is south east, Como is south west, with a city spreading out in 170 km.

Situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, Lake Como offers an extremely varied landscape. Its shores features a succession of pastures, woods, harsh and impressive rocks, charming villages facing the lake, magnificent mansions with beautiful gardens. The middle of the lake, where its three branches come together, has the mildest climate and offers the broadest view. This point can be reached by boat. Here you can enjoy a lovely view of the whole promontory of Bellagio, of the northern Grigna mountains overlooking Valsassina, and, with clear skies, of the upper basin with the Alps in the background. Along the shores, in particular from Cernobbio to Gravedona and Bellagio, you can admire wonderful villas and gardens with plenty of flowers as well as exotic and rare plants.

There are countless activities you can enjoy outdoors:

1.Wine and food road of the Valtellina

The Road traversing the Denominazione dei Vini DOC and DOCG area describes the lands where the great red wines of Valtellina are produced exploring the area of Sondrio. In Valchiavenna and Valtellina there are numerous prehistoric and historical remains: from rock engravings to castles and stately homes in urban centers and numerous sanctuaries that stand symbolically in a sea of vines.

The territory of the Wine and Food Road of the Valtellina is divided into five areas corresponding to geographical and historical boundaries: the Contado di Chiavenna (Chiavenna and its environs), the Terziere di Sotto (Morbegno and its environs), the Terziere di Mezzo (Sondrio and its environs), the Terziere di Sopra (Tirano and its environs) and the Magnifica Terra (Bormio and its environs).  The routes among the terraced vineyards on the northern side of the Valtellina valley are very picturesque and scenic and can be toured by car, bicycle or on foot.

2.Wine road of the Colli dei Longobardi

The Road explores the area of Brescia. Starting from the main town it winds its way south-east, returning to Brescia by way of the wine-producing area to the north-east. From the Castle of Brescia on the Cidneo hill, on whose northern slope the vineyard of Pusterla is cultivated (the largest vineyard in an urban area), one proceeds southward towards Flero, to then continue towards Capriano del Colle, Poncarale, Montirone, Castenedolo, Ciliverghe, Rezzato, Botticino and return to Brescia passing through the suburb of Sant'Eufemia. The Wine Road of the Colli dei Longobardi offers the tourist a rich, multi-faceted itinerary that embraces wine-producing and craft activities, art and landscape, history and cultural traditions.

The Oltrepò Pavese, formerly Old Piedmont, is the largest southern-most area of Pavia. It extends over a 70 km long territory south of the Po river, stretching from east to west. Towards the south the terrain is rather hilly. The Oltrepò is famous for its wine production but, as in other parts of Italy, the area also has a rich artistic heritage, boasts scenic landscapes as well as a rich assortment of local produce and a prestigious gastronomic tradition. The vast territory allows tourists to choose among several routes, all obviously worth a visit. These are described in detail in the new guide of the Wine and Food Road of the Oltrepò Pavese.

f. ARESE BORROMEO PALACE

ARESE BORROMEO PALACE

The Arese Borromeo Palace, located in Cesano Maderno (MB), was built for will of Bartholomew III Arese, a key figure in the seventeenth century Lombard policy, under Spanish rule, as he was the main interlocutor of the Habsburgs. The main square, called Esedra, expands the space of the driveway causing a dramatic and elegant effect deliberately avoiding the sense of monumentality.

The lodge is on the first floor, the only one in Lombardy, and once again underlines the importance of a close relationship with the surrounding space and nature. The mosaics rooms are the characteristic of this building, a small neighborhood characterized by a mosaic coating made of small black and white river pebbles creating elegant baroque designs consisting in two fully decorated rooms. On the main floor frescoes cover all the walls, most consistently decorated from floor to ceiling. There are more than forty painted rooms mainly related to the Milan seventeenth century.

The garden perfectly adapts to a conception of French influence. Currently retains the main avenue along the loggia-fountain, stretches over an area of just under 100,000 square meters and is one of the green lungs of the city, located as it is in the heart of the village. The wood of lime trees, oaks and yews along the eastern edge of the green, it connects to the portal of the garden overlooking the parking lot outside the walls. The avenue of hornbeam and the most recent row of poplars along the north side, together with the natural pond at the heart of the meadows, are the main points of walking. Inside there are also shrines and temples that connect to the classical world, with reference to Rome.

The Palace can be visited by payment of a ticket. Guides are free. The tours take place all Sundays from March to October, except in August.

The park is developed into a system of bike paths that wind through woods and fields for a total of about 35 km. Visitoers and cyclists can reach the place by car, thanks to the many car parks nearby. Inside you can find the Lipu and the WWF oases.

A bike tour in the park deserves a first step to Castellazzo Arconati Villa, one of the "villa of delights" of Brianza. Going north you reach Casate with its forest of pine that inspires a little rest. And yet the territories of Misinto and Cogliate with the Natural Reserve of St. Andrew Woods and Lentate sul Seveso with the artificial pool: all this and more a few steps from Milan.

3.Montevecchia and Curone Valley Park

The park stretches from the Brianza hills near Montevecchia with a succession of terraces, fields and wooded "cones" that still characterize the landscape. The southern part of the park is marked by many farms that dot the surface; going to the north are the foothills near Montevecchia, a village on two split-level. Noteworthy is the Sanctuary of Beata Vergine del Carmelo dating the seventh century.

Inside the park there are 11 paths that cross the protected territory from north to south and from west to east, by tapping all the municipalities that are part of the Consortium who manage the area. The most significant trails are enclosed in a circular route that involves the most beautiful and characteristic places of the park, walking in about 6 hours. If you are concerned about the long walk you can break this route choosing alternative shorter routes but surely no less interesting. The Park is full of strenuous hiking, climbing on steep slopes or relaxing routes that follow the crests of sweet hills.

Inside the Milan North Park you can find equipment for leisure time such as allotments for the elderly, bowling greens, children's play areas, free areas for dogs, a velodrome for cyclists amateur, a baseball field and picnic areas.

The Cascina Park Center hosts exhibitions, artistic and sporting events, shows, entertainment and environmental education activities. A vast network of pedestrian trails for a total of over 40 km through the park connects the various neighborhoods that surround it, creating an alternative "sweet" mobility for the entire area north of Milan.

A pedestrian path of 40 km near the river, through woods and villages, which runs between Monza and Lake Alserio.
